Why Help?

Because, if the plan goes through, scenes like these may disappear from Lakewood:

"I am a wildlife photographer who has spent a great deal of time at Lakewood....

"I have shot a wide variety of wildlife there as it is one of my favorite locations anywhere....

"I feel Lakewood is one of the largest and best wildlife habitats left in northeastern Illinois and was deeply disturbed when I had a chance to review the proposed plan."

Have you looked at your Forest Preserve of late?

The following images were taken by the webmaster on January 2nd, 2005.
Deer at lakewood

Deer, grazing in the very field the plan would see leveled to become a picnic ground.

There is a reason it is called a forest preserve.

Looking out onto the field that would be converted...

...and seeing who really belongs there.

Threatened and Endangered Species in Lake County
Many Lake County lakes provide wonderful habitat for state threatened and endangered wildlife species, and many have been found in and around lakes throughout the county.
Most of these species are birds and are frequently spotted as they migrate north in the spring or south in the fall, but there are also many birds that stay and nest during the summer. These species may be threatened or endangered for many different reasons, but primarily from loss of habitat. Habitat reduction or alteration either here in Lake County, at wintering grounds (in the southern U.S., Mexico, Caribbean or South America), or at key locations along migration routes, may negatively impact these species. Resident, non-migratory, wildlife populations are sensitive to local disturbances such as increased urbanization or recreational uses on lakes.

SANDHILL CRANE
Threatened
This is a "State Threatened" species. This means it is likely to be in danger of extinction as a breeding species in the state of Illinois within the forseeable future. It is sensitive to human disturbance, and the draining of marshes has reduced nesting populations in the United States.

NORTHERN HARRIER
Habitat: marshes and open grasslands.
HENSLOW SPARROW
Enadangered
Found in open fields with tall herbaceous vegetation
Osprey
Threatened
Their habitats include shallow water estuaries, lakes, and rivers.
CENTRULEAN WARBLER
Threatened
This bird requires large tracts of mature deciduous forest. It prefers open woods with tall trees and relatively little undergrowth. It is often found near bottomlands and rivers. Since 1966 its numbers have declined by 70 percent, due primarily to habitat fragmentation and destruction in both its breeding and winter ranges.
YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT HERON
Threatened
Habitat: Ponds, wooded swamp, riparian forest, and lowland deciduous forest.
BLACK CROWNED NIGHT HERON
Threatened
Although they frequent wooded swamps, ponds, lakes they have also been found to take advantage OF other diverse habitats.
Can we not do the same for them?
