Lakewood Forest Preserve

Please Excuse our Mess

While attempting to reconstruct the site, the clouds parted and a bit of sun has shown through.
A private offer of land donation or sale came forward and the preliminary information sent to both the Chicago2016 Organizing Committee and to the LCFPD Board.

Mission Accomplished:
NO OLYMPICS IN FOREST PRESERVES

The Chicago2016 Olympic Organizing Committee has recently announced that Tempel Farms has been selected as the Equestrian Venue location. All Forest Preserve possibilities supposedly have been eliminated. Therefore, collectively, we have won the case. No, it was not just PreserveLakewood that accomplished it, but was accomplished collectively by all of the groups who spoke out.

We are now back on-message that the Forest Preserves are not parks and playgrounds.

Thank you for your support

ORGANIZATION MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to protect, preserve and promote the environmental, aesthetic, wildlife, equestrian and hiker needs and interests of Lakewood Forest Preserve - especially the portion south of Ivanhoe Road, located in Lake County, Illinois.

Accordingly, we oppose efforts and activities of the Lake County Forest Preserve District to modify the existing trails; situate or construct parking, picnic, recreational and/or other such facilities; and/or otherwise endanger or diminish the natural beauty, serenity and quality of Lakewood Forest Preserve.

The Lake County Forest Preserve District (LCFPD) Board of Commissioners proposed plans that would decimate this Midwestern wonderland. The Board once again has plans that will destroy the value of Lakewood as a natural habitat. The current plans are based on the 2016 Olympics using the land for an equestrian venue.

This "blacktopping" would raze prairie fields, seriously endanger indigenous wildlife, displace existing horse and hiking trails, along with a host of other harmful effects. Out of this reckless disregard for nature and the public will, a rapidly growing group of concerned citizens has coalesced. Our aim is to stop the politicians and bureaucrats from defiling this land and destroying habitat.

Prior activities included closing down a model aircraft field and preventing construction of picnic shelters that were incompatible with the habitat. This was not accomplished by creating a public uproar, but by creating intelligent, well-thought messages conveyed to state officials.

Both were stopped by the Illinois Department of Natural Resource (IDNR) recommendations, prompted by our public awareness campaign rather than those who present themselves as stewards of the lands.

We urgently need, and ask for, your active support.
